Cora stands surrounded by flying crows, tossing food to them.

NARRATION: She loved the local crows.

NARRATION: Every day she gave her lunch to them.

Panel 2

On the school bus, children point and laugh at Cora while crows fly alongside the bus windows.

CHILD 1: Do you see how those nasty black birds follow her all the time?

CHILD 2: Hey, Cora! What are you, their princess? HAHA!

Panel 3

The children chant mockingly while Cora looks down.

CHILDREN: ha ha CROW PRINCESS! CROW PRINCESS! ha ha

Panel 4

Cora sits alone on the bus, head bowed, while crows fly outside. The narration reveals the deeper meaning.

NARRATION: Once upon a time, there was a girl cast out by her own kind.

NARRATION: Once upon a time, there was a girl beloved of crows...

NARRATION: ...a crow princess.

CORA: (thinking) I remember...

I got a bit of flack in one review of my book for using altered photos, like this school bus. At the time, I wasn’t skilled enough to have drawn that myself, and I had no light box for tracing. Eh, I did what I could. Today I’d light box it in Manga Studio.

I wanted to introduce this idea of “a crow princess” early on.
