A simple pair of glasses glowing against a dark background - the object of her desire.

I had a friend once in a similar situation–his glasses were in way worse shape than mine had ever been. I don’t know what happened to him or where he is now. But we were really good friends. We used to play Magic: the Gathering together when I came down off the mountain, and I’d drive him around town. I used to tell him, “When I make it big, I’ll get you new glasses.” I don’t think he thought I was serious. And we never defined what “big” was.

After I started getting paid to make comics weekly for gURL.com, I figured that was as “big,” and I took him out to get his eyes checked and get a new pair of glasses–with the thin plastic and glare-proofing and all those good things that Medicaid doesn’t give you. It was the best feeling in the world. I will cherish that memory till I die. I just hope he’s able to get new glasses now, too. He was a good person and a good friend.
