Time passes. Rachel still waits, looking increasingly sad.

More time passes. Rachel continues waiting at the diner, looking dejected.

PAGE 1, PANEL 4

Lyle enters the diner with another girl (a waitress in the background). Rachel's face shows surprise.

LYLE: "It'll be just a minute."

GIRL: "Two french fries to go, please."

PAGE 1, PANEL 5

Lyle notices Rachel at her table, surprised.

LYLE: "Oh, Rachel. You're still here?"

PAGE 1, PANEL 6

Rachel looks upset. Her drafted letters are visible on the table.

RACHEL: "Where were you?"

PAGE 1, PANEL 7

Lyle explains himself while Rachel looks hurt. The girl with Lyle is visible.

LYLE: "Well, Sparrow failed her exam, and she was really upset about it, and she called me, and I came over to console her... I thought you would have gone home by now."

PAGE 1, PANEL 8

Rachel confronts Lyle, upset.

RACHEL: "You could have called."

LYLE: "You don't have a cell."

RACHEL: "You could have called the diner."

SFX: tsk tsk

See the multiple chocolate milk glasses indicating the passage of time? I love chocolate milk. If I’m really hungry or thirsty, I can go through a half gallon of the stuff, no problem.

Here we see Lyle giving some rather weak reasons for not showing up. This is a sign that he’s “just not that into you,” by the way. Real friends and love interests don’t just leave you hanging.
