NARRATION: "It was my first adventure to a big city. I was determined to visit one of the new 'Hot Topic' stores I had heard about."

NARRATION: "(This was before there was one in every mall.)"

RACHEL: (thinking) "I was scared at first. The music was loud, and it was hard to make out what all the black, spiky things were supposed to be."

Rachel holds up a piece of clothing, looking confused.

RACHEL: "These are pants?"

Rachel discovers the boot display wall at the back of the store. Rows of platform boots, heels, and various styles are on display.

NARRATION: "But lo and behold, in the back was the Great Wall of Boots."

Rachel gazes in awe at the boot selection, with angel wings appearing behind her to show her joy.

NARRATION: "Boots of all sizes and shapes. Platforms. Heels. I was in heaven!"

This is a true story. Hot Topic was a new thing, and I was in Pennsylvania visiting an old school friend. She thought I would like the store, and boy did I! Within the next few years the store was everywhere, though, and it was no longer such a novelty. I had to turn to other sources of boots.
